Ever since I heard about Marvel vs. Capcom 3: Fate of Two Worlds at E3 2010, I was pretty excited to see it’s release. Now that it’s out and I’ve had a chance to play it, I’m still pretty excited as far as fighting games go. Starting the game up I notice one thing is certain...the game looks amazing. The graphics are top notch. All the characters and their attacks are stunning. As far as the selection of characters goes I’m a little conflicted. You have the classics such as, Wolverine, Storm, Captain America, Ryu, Chun-Li, The Hulk, Akuma, and the like. New to the roster are fan favorites such as Dante, Deadpool, Taskmaster, Amaterasu (from Okami), Thor, Viewtiful Joe, Chris Redfield, and Albert Wesker. This is an impressive list, but I could help, but ask…Where’s Mega Man, or Gambit, or Mr. Fantastic? No Human Torch? Why isn’t Nemesis a playable character? Sure Nemesis has a cameo, but wouldn’t that be just badass to beat the crap out of Wesker or even Wolverine with one of Umbrella Corps' most powerful weapons?
Marvel vs. Capcom 3 introduces a new feature called “Simple” control mode. I tend to like this feature, but I can see the waters getting muddier because of it. Simple Mode allows the player to simplify the controls of the game while shortening the characters moveset. This feature is nice for casual gamers and those new to the series, but makes online play and versus mode a pain because a veteran player can come in playing normal mode and get his ass beat by a noob using simple mode. On the flip side, however the new Mission Mode is designed to get the player to learn how to use each characters moves and combos. To complete each mission you have to perform a specific combo to complete the mission.
The Arcade mode is fun and takes me back to days of playing these games in a pizzeria because I’d rather have played games than sat around and talked to my parents …despite the fact that they paid for every game. One complaint I have about the Arcade Mode is that the final boss fight against Galactus is sometimes insanely hard. Even on easy you can be taken out by just one of his random attacks that produces an insanely high combo. It’s just too easy to lose when you’ve almost beat it and you’ve made it that far already. On the whole though, I’d have to say that Marvel vs. Capcom 3 is a great fighting game with an interesting story, and plenty of badass and strange characters to choose from. It’s fast-paced. The finishing and special moves are unique and beautiful. If you’re a Marvel fan (which we all should be) and you enjoy a good fighting game I definitely recommend picking up or at least renting or borrowing a copy of this game. I’m going to give it a solid 4 out of 5.
