I do have friends that are into the Gothic scene. However, that does not make me, personally, a big fan of it. I'm all for individuality and self-expression. I love my Goth friends. When it comes to Gothic comics, however, I'm not such a big fan. That's exactly what you get with the "Gloomcookie" comics. Gothic, Gothic, and more Gothic. The characters are dressed with leather, corset tops, skull hair clips, wacky top hats, and high collars. If its YOUR thing, you'll die for it (heh...Gothic pun. God, I'm lame!).
The "Gloomcookie" comics are "a social satire on real-life Gothic subculture and as a supernatural fantasy" (I love you, Wikipedia!). I guess I can see that. Honestly, this comic definitely isn't my thing. I totally respect the writer and the artist and respect the comic as a whole, but I just don't like it. In this particular issue, Vermilion Sinclair is marrying Moon Raven. The entire time, she has been lying about having the "power of the Nosferatu". Vermilion finds out when he hears Moon Raven talking about how he would believe any lie she tells. Extremely disappointed, Vermilion sends Moon Raven away, saying that he never wants to see her again. Using the reception as a general party, the story shifts to the subplots. Lex notices Chrys' personality and questions her about who she attacked last (because her personality is reflecting the personality of a character named Isabella). Things get heated, and Lex leaves to seek out Sebastian to bring her back to life (I haven't read any of the others so I'm not exactly sure how she's dead...). Damion appears out of the bushes and is angry about Lex and Sebastian's time together. After some conversation, Sebastian brings Lex back to life. End of story.
So...specifics...
Creativity of Writing: 3/5 I think the concept is ok. I mean...I'm sure there's tons of Gothic-oriented comics out there about the undead and dead and living. I'm sure there's lots of characters in the comic world with Lolita-styles and gloomy, emo eyes. Satire though it may be, I'm taking it at face value. I do wish that more was packed into the thick-ish issue. Really, the little content that was included took up way too much room.
Creativity of Art: 2/5 Please note that the image above isn't a page in Issue #26. I used it for an example of the style. This isn't my style of art. I wouldn't create something like this. I feel like it's far too simple and the pages overall don't even contain enough detail to keep my eye entertained. When lines are bold, they're too bold and they look like a runny Rapidograph pen. I don't like very fine lines mixed with solid blocks of space. Silhouettes cut out of a detailed background drive me nuts. I appreciate that every artist is different (after all, I'm an artist myself...well...I'm in art school, anyway!), but this style just doesn't please my eyes.
Overall Casual Read Rating: 2/5 It just isn't my thing. I need more action, more emotion (in this case, there was a severe lack of emotion), more dynamic characters, more detail in the art, more going on per issue....
Note to the Creator(s): Your comic just isn't my taste. I am one person. I have one opinion. I have my own preferences. My personal review doesn't mean anything, really. I know, from reading the letter from the writer, that this comic has both a massive and loyal following. Nothing personal. Different strokes to different folks, right? With the MOST love.
Until next comic!
XOXO Ashleigh
