"The Walking Dead" Issue #1 Review

I’m jumpy now. As cool as Zombies and the idea of a Zombie Apocalypse is, I’m not sure how I’d react to maggot-infested, rot-breathed, flesh-eating “people” wandering around. I like to think I’d be all bad ass and shoot ‘em down. In all honesty, I’d want to be hiding behind the person that really WAS that way. Would I? Heck no! I’d just pretend that it’s House of the Dead: Overkill, or Left 4 Dead 2. All a game, right?

Anyway…today I review “The Walking Dead #1” by Robert Kirkman and Tony Moore. The comic begins with a pair of Policemen in a standoff with an escaped convict. He’s convinced that he’s not going back to the pen, and stands his ground. Rick asks his partner to cover him, his partner’s hand is shot, and Rick is shot in the chest/shoulder as a result. Waking up in the hospital, Rick is confused. He tries to get out of bed, only to fall. Calling for the nurse, Rick realizes how quiet it is…how eerie the absence of people is. He wanders down the hallway, finding Zombies in the elevator and cafeteria. I think at this point, he’s beginning to catch on. The minute the first maggot-bag fell out of the elevator, I would have gotten the hell outta there! Seriously!! Find one…ok. Just don’t go looking for more!! He grabs a bike and heads up the road. What looks to be a woman is lying in the ditch. For some reason, this one makes Rick especially emotional. Wandering around, Rick is knocked out cold by the son of Morgan Jones (a survivor who has decided to ride it out at home). The group heads to the Police Station where Rick gives Morgan a load of guns, ammo, and a Police Car. Rick sees a Zombie trying to reach them through the fence and begins to shoot it but Morgan reminds him that it can’t get to them and that he should save his bullet. Rick agrees and heads out to Atlanta to find his wife and son (the media has told everyone to head to the big cities). On the way out, Rick stops to shoot the woman zombie that had him so torn up previously. This detail is bugging the heck out of me. Who is this woman? His mom? Why does he waste a bullet putting her out of her misery? Why does he feel so drawn to her, of all “people”? It drives me crazy!!

So…on to the ratings!

Creativity of Art: 4/5 I think this comic is lacking the contrast that I, personally, as an artist love. There’s a lot of grey, but the artist makes it work. It looks realistic enough and the Zombies are drawn with enough detail that the comic doesn’t really need the contrast and bold, black lines. I feel like the facial expressions were effective and emotions were put across effectively.

Creativity of Writing: 4/5 There’s a lot of Zombie comics out there, but this one has to have something special about it that isn’t revealed in the first issue (that wasn’t meant to be snarky…just…it seems like every other Zombie comic at this point). It is, after all, premiering in October of this year. Something I don’t understand: How was Rick spared? He was incapacitated and unconscious. He’s the perfect target for a flesh-craving monster. Why wasn’t he a Zombie Happy Meal?

Overall Casual Read: 5/5 Everything together works. Plus…this girl is a complete sucker for ANYTHING Zombie. Don’t believe me? My pet rat died a few months ago and I’m still enjoying his company… I wish! LOL.

You REALLY REALLY REALLY need to continue reading this series! The plot gets thicker and thicker as it moves along. By #7 there are way bigger threats than the zombies. It turns into more of an apocalyptic soap opera with the walking dead just as the backdrop.
