Random Geekery!: SyFy Fact or Faked

I’m SUCH a huge fan of Syfy already, so it doesn’t take me to get hooked when I see a show on there for the first time. Tonight, just sitting around, I was watching Ghost Hunters and didn’t bother to change the channel once it was over. The show? “Fact or Faked: Paranormal Files”. The episode? “Predator/Red Sky at Night”. Opinion? EPIC.
I’ve heard of both the case of the Beast of Dartmoor and the Lights of El Cajon, so having a bit of back knowledge on the topic helped. I feel like I would have been just fine watching with an emptier mind, though. Right off the bat, I noticed how they operate. The six investigators each bring one idea/video/mystery to the table and everyone then votes on the two favorite. The group of six is then split into two groups of three, and each group is sent one of the two destinations. What really makes this show work is that the investigators are skeptical about anything they’re looking at. If you believe strongly in what you’re looking for, you will find it or at least evidence of it. If you’re playing hard-to-convince and you end up convinced, you know SOMETHING’S up. The investigators take every offered explanation of the paranormal event/being and either debunk the explanation or confirm it. In the case of the Beast of Dartmoor, they analyzed the data they gathered (comparing the strides of dogs, ponies, and lions to that of the beast running on video) and created a totally new explanation (a boar/lion hybrid) for the problem. Not only did they analyze the movement of the beast on the eyewitness video, they headed out late at night to where the beast was spotted and followed the string of goat/sheep carcasses. That thing is VICIOUS. There’s nothing left when it’s done! I’ve added this show to my “list” for sure! Mythbusters, Ghost Hunters, Scariest Places on Earth, etc.: welcome “Fact or Faked: Paranormal Files” to the family of my regularly watched shows!
