"Frenemy of the State" Issue #1 Review

Holy crap! Talk about a bad @$$ chick! Ariana (the leading lady) is smart, gorgeous, tough, and oh yeah, a spy. Her character is so appealing because she wears so many hats and spreads her talents around so that her spy life blends into her personal life. We don’t really get to see how she got all of her training, but there’s no doubt that she’s good, especially considering that the C.I.A. is after her.

The comic opens with a “unbirthday” party of a not-so-bright socialite. Ariana completely makes her look like an idiot by pointing out that the concept of “unbirthday parties” is part of the Disney movie “
Alice In Wonderland” and not part of the book, as her friend says. With host distracted, Ariana sneaks out to call her boyfriend who is too “sick” to go on a date. Using her mad hacking skills, she uses the cameras in his backyard (he’s the Governor’s son) to spy on him. What’s that? Another girl? Topless in the pool? OHHELLNO! Jumping fences and hiding in trees, Ariana eventually confronts him. By “confronts” I mean “breaks his jaw”. Awesome. If I’d broken every guys’ jaw that’d ever pissed me off, the Dental Association of America would have presented me with an award YEARS ago. ha ha, joking guys, okay maybe slightly serious... Anyway, back to Ariana. The police arrive, arrest her, blahblahblah. She’s taken into custody and it’s obvious that she’s not intimidated by the interrogation. Compromise is reached and Ariana becomes a spy for the C.I.A. to avoid jail time. Her first assignment sends her right back to her ex-boyfriend’s place. She breaks into a safe to steal a file. Curiosity gets the best of her and she watches the video file on the nearby computer. The awesome thing here is that you get to SEE what isn’t said. Sure, the writing mentions a sex tape, but the entire scene is reflected in a close-up panel of her eyes. I LOVE when art speaks louder than words. Suddenly security breaks in (in response to her struggle with a man who sets off a gun) and she’s forced to run. The comic closes with Ariana on a window ledge, jumping to a nearby helicopter to escape, narrowly missing, and falling over a busy street below. Are you serious? I will definitely keep up with this series!

Art Creativity Rating: 4 out of 5, The art was used to show scenes that were only briefly mentioned in the writing. the Creativity is nice, but the art is a little simplistic.

Writing Creativity Rating: 3 1/2 out of 5, Paris Hiltonesque spy thriller with lots of action, not a lot of twists, but it keeps you on your toes, has a cliff hanger ending, so it leaves you needing more.

Recommendation Rating: 5 out of 5, If you like action/spy thrillers. 4 out of 5, for a casual read
