Watch This!: Super 8!

#KryptoDies' Jordan Worth Cobb Reviews "Super 8"

J.J. Abrams is a wonderful genius. The creator of LOST, Alias, Fringe, Felicity, and Undercovers (first three shows great and the last two not so great) and producer of Cloverfield and director of Mission: Impossible 3 and that AMAZING Star trek film from 2009. Steven Spielberg is a wonderful genius as well. Indiana Jones, E.T., Close Encounters of the Third Kind, Jurassic Park, Saving Private Ryan, Catch Me If You Can, and Schneider’s List and producer of The Goonies. So together they bring us a wonderful tale of kids wanting to become aspiring filmmakers, love, summer fun, aliens, and friendship.

In 1979 the United States Air Force shuts down a portion of Area 51 and ships the material stored at the decommissioned site by rail to an undisclosed but secure location in Ohio. In the fictional town of Lillian, Ohio, a group of teenagers are making a movie with a Super 8 mm film camera when they witness a train crash. They suspect it was not an accident. There are disappearances and unexplained events around town, and the local deputy investigates the cause of the events leading to the discovery of something inhuman.

I’m going to start out by saying, Super 8 is thus far my favorite film of the year. Now I have to credit all the child actors here. Joel Courtney, Elle Fanning, Riley Griffiths, Zach Mills, Ryan Lee, and Gabriel Basso. These kids were incredibly talented and I cared for their characters. These kids will make you think back when you were a kid. I know it did me for I related most to Charles played by Riley Griffiths. Wanting to be a filmmaker and just this great knowledge of it and wanting to do more outside the small town you’re in. The adult roles are solid. Mostly notable Kyle Chandler of Friday Night Lights (TV show, not the movie), Ron Eldard, and Noah Emmerich. Chandler I say has the best of the main adults as the father of main character Joe, played by Joel Courtney, being a single father and the police deputy in town. I really felt for both them as they were just stellar here.

This is similar to Cloverfield, which Abrams produced, in that the mystery here is what the monster is and they have done a great and clever job here at keeping the monster a secret and I will absolutely not give it away here. Steven Spielberg produced this movie and it shows as Abrams, like Spielberg has a flare for the fantastical, wonderful, and amazement of film. Now some people I hear are annoyed by this movie, saying its so much Spielberg like and that he really directed that. I can see that but I actually loved it for that. Personally I didn’t mind it at all. It didn’t bother me. The movie is like a cross of E.T., Close Encounters of the Third Kind, The Goonies, Cloverfield, The Iron Giant, and yes even LOST. This is a film made BY film fans FOR film fans. Throughout the movie the kids are talking about what helps makes a movie enjoyable and the movie does hit all those points. The effects here were great. They went for practical as much as they could and I prefer practical myself. The train derailment scene was amazing. I was gripping my seat during it. I jumped a couple times out of nowhere. The movie isn’t scary, its just really intense. I love this movie. It was incredible, wonderful, amazing, smart, action packed, and loads of fun. Like I said, it’s my favorite film of the year so far. I will even go out and buy this on Blu-Ray. I just highly recommend you all go see this movie. Especially if you’re a big film fan. Go see it now!

Final Verdict: 5/5!
