Random Geekery: "The Walking Dead" on AMC!

If you're like me and you often find yourself fantasizing about the approaching Zombie apocalypse (It's GOING to happen! It's too much fun for it NOT to!), then you NEED to be watching "The Walking Dead" on AMC! If you're a fan of drama caused by trauma, you NEED to be watching "The Walking Dead" on AMC! If you're looking for the nitty gritty look at the human mind once the world as we know it is gone, you NEED to be watching "The Walking Dead" on AMC. Did I mention that the show is called "The Walking Dead" and that it's on AMC? No? Well...it is.

If you've been following me long, you know that I've reviewed the comic books that inspired the show.  Honestly, I thought the show would be complete and utter crap. Seriously. The comics were amazing, and usually when people get to messing with an adaptation, it gets a little messy/ugly. I know there's been a lot of hype about it, so I decided to at least give it a chance. I've watched episode #1 (Days Gone Bye) and am currently buffering episode #2 (Guts) (yeah...I missed it on TV tonight. Snap!). These are my opinions and observations, based on what I've seen so far.

Some scenes are JUST like the panels in the comic. Sadly, some that I wanted to see were left out. I LOVE this. If I had to look at this constantly, I'd just read the comics. However, it's changed up enough that you aren't constantly seeing panels. I think it's there partially because it was done perfectly in the comic and partially to give us loyal readers a thrill at seeing something we recognize...well...it makes ME happy, anyway. A con to this is that there were certain panels that I expected to see. One of those panels is when the door is opened into the cafeteria (or whatever that giant room is) and there's Zombies EVERYWHERE. That scene wasn't in the show. Instead, there were doors chained and boarded shut with "Don't Open Dead Inside" (or something like that!) that the Zombies were sticking their fingers through, trying to escape.
The plot has been thickened a little. If I remember correctly, in the comics, the father and son duo (Volume One) lost their wife/mother, but she was gone. She wasn't really brought back up and you definitely didn't see her. In the movie, the pair are plagued by the fact that she appears at their door every night. The father said that he couldn't bear to shoot her. In the first episode, the ongoing struggle within him involves trying to decide if he should "kill" her or not. By adding details like this, it makes the plot beefier.
The Zombies look amazing! These aren't face-paint-smeared-on-in-clever-ways Zombies. These are REAL, rotten, falling-apart flesh cravers! Even the bodies that are left chewed apart look AMAZING! I'm not sure who's responsible, but THANK YOU  for giving us a (what I assume to be) realistic look at what the living dead will look like when it's go time. In "Days Gone Bye", there's a Zombie woman dragging her top half around with her organs streaming out behind her. Gross, I know. But still, it looks SO realistic (not like I've ever seen a person dragging their intestines around...so how would I know, anyway?!?)! Here....just...look.

Crazy, huh?! Well...that's all I've got for now as far as specifics. Overall, I love this show. I think it's going to be a BIG success. It's like "Big Brother" but with dead flesh-cravers everywhere! It feeds our need to see the lives of others in an intimate way and our fascination with misfortune in the lives of others. I really, REALLY enjoy the show and I can't wait to see episode #2. Speaking of that...my episode is probably buffered by now. :)

Until Next Time!
XOXO Ashleigh
