Webcomic Review: Digger!

"Digger" is definitely a comic like I've never seen before. It's got a lot of things that set it apart from other webcomics out there. For one- the comic is going on 900 pages long! What does that mean for a webcomic? That it has a strong, loyal following, that it's worth reading, that the author is developing the characters and plot at an nice rate and in a progressive way. The comic also captures it's audience's imagination and interest. But that's just my speculation about "Digger"...

With no speculation whatsoever, "Digger" is a story about a female Wombat who is digging tunnels. In the first page, she comes across a pocket of gas underground and begins to hallucinate (or is she? ;) ). She finds herself talking to a god (I find it interesting that the gods live underground!) and it becomes clear that she answers to no one, normal or magical. After speaking with the Ganesh, it becomes obvious that something is going on in this entire underground world. Odd... I haven't read all 900 pages, but I'm working on it. From what I can tell, Digger will encounter so many more characters and I get the feeling that the fate of this underground world will rest on her muscled-from-digging shoulders.

Digger is lost, too. This, at first, was something that I forgot. But then I got to thinking "What's she supposed to do for sunlight, water, and food?!?" The water and food thing I'm sure is solvable, but Wombats aren't meant to live constantly underground! Plus...doesn't she have family or friends to miss?

If you're into mythology or animals or mysteries, I can see this comic being right up your alley. It's charming in its appearance, but it seems very intelligent and entertaining.

Let's get on to what I thought of it (so far!)!

Creativity of Writing: 4/5 This comic is easy to read, easy to understand, and easy to follow. Digger has her own rough-around-the-edges personality and a take-no-bullcrap personality. She's determined, and I think her personality is already dynamic. If she develops as much as I think she will over the course of the comic, it's bound to be great! The idea of this comic is AWESOME! Do you know anything else out there like this? Didn't think so!

Creativity of Art: 5/5 What I really like about this art is that it reminds me of the Linoleum cuts that I so love in Printmaking class. They're very contrast-y, bold, and eye-catching. The large areas of black are perfectly accented by the smaller areas of white. There's a lot of detail without much work as far as detail. Ursula Vernon  definitely knows how to manipulate small details to make them seem huge.

Overall Casual Read Rating: 4/5 It's a cute comic with a great plot and a nice progression of things. I think that it's going to prove to be very interesting with twists and turns. Digger is an awesome character with awesome dynamic. I recommend this to anyone into magic, animals, or mystery/suspense. I can't wait to see what's next!
