I'm SO excited to be showing the world a webcomic that I found today! It's charming, funny, clean, and original. Definitely unique, that's for sure! According to the website, Alyster & Buttercup is:
"Alyster & Buttercup is a comic strip written and illustrated by Jordan Monsell. The strip follows the adventures of Buttercup, a dairy cow, and Alyster, her would ALYSTER & Buttercup is a comic strip written and illust alien abductor.
Alyster, a young alien 'Gray', is sent to earth to abduct a cow, as part of his 'right of passage'. In the attempted abduction, Buttercup, the intended victim, crashes Alyster’s spaceship, stranding him on Earth. The two become unlikely friends, working together to avoid capture by the US military, alien bounty-hunters, and two FBI field agents. It’s 'The X-Files' meets 'O, Brother, Where Art Thou?'"
According to me, it's sheer awesome. The webcomic is very new, with (so far!) new posts ranging from multiple times a day at most to twice a week at least. I'm definitely hooked.
Why, you ask?
Creativity of Writing: 5/5 Who would have thought to tell an alien abduction story from the viewpoint of the abductee? Sure, if the abductee is HUMAN. But in the case of a COW? I think I can safely say it's never been done. Add tons of attitude, character, cleverness, and sassiness to said cow, and you're in for a very entertaining webcomic. Jordan Monsell does a great job giving his characters charming personalities that, although non-human, are relatable nevertheless. So far the strips/posts have mostly focused on Buttercup and her solutions to her growing problems, but I know that the plot will grow, thicken, twist, and turn. I can't wait to see more of Alyster's personality and the trouble that the two get into. I feel like this webcomic is going places, and I'm extremely happy to be featuring it in its baby stages.
Creativity of Art: 5/5 Sometimes, a webcomic will be very dry as far as content goes but have extremely beautiful art. Other times, the webcomic will look like complete crap but have an intriguing, hilarious plot. With "Alyster & Buttercup", you don't have to choose. The art is FANTASTIC. The expressions on the animal's faces, the coloring, the style of the drawings...it all works. The comic is wholly Jordan Monsell's. I say that meaning that the art meshes with the writing extremely well. I think what really gets me is that these strips look like something that you would see in a huge graphic novel collection of classic cartoon strips. BEAUTIFUL work, Jordan.
Overall Casual Read Rating: 5/5 This webcomic's got it all (and some cute animals!). It's funny, easy to read, well drawn and colored (holy crap is it well colored!), and entertaining. I would HIGHLY recommend as a daily read. This girl will be going back for SURE!
Note to the creator(s) (this is a new section!): Great job. This webcomic is beautiful and I wish the best of luck as you continue writing, creating, and posting. I'll be sharing it with all of my homies, for sure. :)
Until Next Comic,
XOXO Ashleigh
