I would totally hate Scott Pilgrim if it weren’t for his being so awesome. REALLY?? TWO girlfriends?? I mean, I guess he and Ramona aren’t exactly OFFICIALLY together (there’s the whole Knives thing getting in the way…and oh…the evil exes). Back to the beginning….
Scott….is a loser. This fact is reinforced by the diagram of Scott and Wallace’s apartment. Everything belongs to Wallace except for the clothes on the floor and a few random things. He’s really got nothing going for him. He’s “between jobs”, sleeps in the same bed as his roommate, and feels the need to date a 17 year old high school girl (he’s 23, by the way). Scott begins to see a girl in his dreams, he’s not sure who she is, but he feels very drawn to her. He sees her rollerblading while at the library with Knives one day (uh oh!) and is completely and utterly obsessed from that point on.
Later, at a party, he finds her holding up a wall and attempts to talk to her. Fail. Talking to people at the party, he discovers that she works for Amazon and that she’s American. What’s the obsessive thing to do? Order C.D.s from Amazon and hope to God that Ramona delivers them. During his time on the internet, Matthew (the first evil ex) sends Scott and email that he scans and promptly deletes. It’s a miserable weekend (there’s no delivery, after all!) and finally Monday rolls around. Ramona delivers his C.D.s and she and Scott have a long (and AWKWARD) conversation. It leads to the two hanging out, interrupted by a helluva snowstorm. Scott heads to Ramona’s place and ends up staying the night…in her bed…in his underwear. No sex in this Volume, kids! Sorry!
As he’s leaving, Scott invites Ramona to see his band, Sex Bob-omb. As they’re preparing to play, the first of the evil exes, Matthew, swoops in on Scott. Between the punches and kicks, Scott tries to question Matthew about Ramona. He holds his own and defeats him. Matthew leaves behind a total of $2.10 in coins, and Scott has to borrow $0.15 from Ramona (See? LOSER!).
All in all, I think I’m really, really going to like this series. There’s action, romance, (yeah…I’m secretly envious of Scott and Ramona’s adorable relationship), and comedy. I love the idea that he has to EARN the title of “Ramona’s boyfriend”.
So…on to the review.
RATINGS:
Creativity of Art: 4.5/5 I LOVE the fact that the comic is drawn simply (simple isn’t meant to be a degrading term…it’s positive in this light). The bold lines have a retro-feel and it makes the character design all the more interesting. There’s enough detail that it can be considered art (duh! It is!). My one concern is that the cover of the Volume looks freaking amazing in color...wouldn’t the whole thing look pretty amazing that way? I know it takes a lot of work, but I think the coloring would be well worth it.
Creativity of Story: 5/5 It’s got everything you could ask for! It’s like all the genres (well…there’s no horror…) got pooped into one Port-A-Potty! It’s really creative. I know some guys have to buy flowers and nasty, cheap chocolates to earn their girl, but Scott? He’s bad ass! He has to fight SEVEN EVIL exes.
Overall Casual Read: 5/5 I don’t have one negative thing to say about this. I think that everyone, regardless of any type, would enjoy this book. I would DEFINITELY be happy if I were stuck in an airport with this.
Congratulations on your success, Bryan Lee O'Malley! If any graphic novel deserved to be optioned for a film, it was definitely the Scott Pilgrim series.
