Japan is so much MORE than that! That's why I LOVEFried Chicken and Sushi. If you haven't found it, it's not too late! At first, reading it, I thought "Man...just another web comic I'll NEVER be able to catch up on...". Not at all! It took me about fifteen minutes to read from the beginning to end! The comics follow Khalid Birdsong who is an African American man teaching English in Japan. Every Tuesday and Thursday, he post a comic about what's going on. He's adjusting, learning new things, and in a country where he can't talk to ANYONE. I couldn't imagine being in his place, much less having time to report about it!! If you're interested in his adventure or true-to-life Japanese culture, check it out here!
Now for my ratings. Hooray!
Creativity of Writing: Fried Chicken and Sushi is FUNNY. It's awesome seeing this whole new world through Khalid's eyes and experiencing how AWKWARD it is to live in a place where you're so OUT of place! Maybe I just thrive on awkwardness (I am, after all, a total geek/nerd!)...but I'm convinced that Khalid is just a regular comedian.
Creativity of Art: Khalid's comics are laid out in the classic comic strip style and are very easy to read. The speech balloons are easy to follow and the strip overall flows nicely. I'm pretty fond of the art. The lines are bold, and the details are classic pen-and-ink looking. I love his use of motion lines. When there's color (for the most part it's black and white...but every so often you get a colored page!) it's bright, well done, and beautiful!
Overall Rating: 5/5 I like this comic for more than it's comic-value. It's a look into another culture and social commentary on what it's like to be thrust into a world that you're unfamiliar with. It's so much more than a funny, well made, entertaining comic. It's educational and insightful. Well done, Khalid! Good luck with your adventures and stay safe!
